Scales

Major and minor scales are described for you to be able to play them as a sequence, without skipping any note (between the 2nd and the 1st strings).

Fingerings are mostly adopted to play several other patterns rather than just a sequence:

  • 3 notes: 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5, ...
  • 4 notes: 1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5, 3-4-5-6, ...
  • Through one: 1-3, 2-4, 3-5, 4-6, ...

I assume that you can decide whether to slide up or down.

Pentatonic scales are described as boxes, without any necessity to keep notes in a sequence while playing.

It's not exactly correct to say that pentatonic scale is just a heptatonic with some steps skipped, but it's the way they are commonly described in books and on the web, so I'll keep naming steps like «♭3» and «♭7».

Fingering is equal in major and minor pentatonic scales, but it will be helpful to have two different points of view when you think of what you're playing and how it corresponds to the harmony.
