Some Examples

I don't consider myself as a person wise enough to teach someone and tell you what to play.

But I want to share my «user experience» with you to let you understand why I use this tuning.

Up to this moment everything was based on facts. Starting from now you may call it my personal opinion.

#FACFAF tuning itself

  • There are only 3 different tones on open strings (instead of 5 in standard), therefore there are only 3 «octave positions». I believe that «octave position» concept is useless in this tuning.

Melodies and the 1st string

  • The 1st string should definitely be used while playing (composing) melodies. Accurately, though.
  • Notes on the 1st string are surprisingly high, and it will be good to figure out the most appropriate arrangements by yourself. I like to duplicate a part of a melody from the 3rd string to the 1st (or vice versa).

  • This string is not so good for bends, but it is good to play when bending the 2nd or the 3rd string (try several intervals, it's amazing).

  • When melody goes «up» on the other strings, it's a good idea to play «down» on the 1st. And vice versa.

Chords

  • Chords are comfortable to play with very low string action.

  • Chords with root in the 6th and other notes on the 4th, 3rd and the 2nd (muting the 5th) sound similar to barre chords on 5th string in standard tuning. The difference appears with strumming - you don't have to mute the 6th string, but have to mute the 5th (and I personally like it more).

  • It's comfortable to sharpen/flatten specific notes of a chord in this tuning.

  • It's very comfortable to strum octave intervals with the 3rd and the 4th fingers, muting all other strings with a barre.
